A people-centered experience

How do you ensure that online museum offerings are optimally tailored to the needs of different visitors?

The Tropenmuseum aims to inspire an open view of the world, thereby increasing people's interconnectedness and thus promoting world citizenship. With a modern design, stunning imagery and a flexible CMS, it now has a website that supports this mission.

Manage four sites from one organization

To provide the central communications team with the right tools, a Drupal 8 multi-site was chosen. This allows them to manage the content of the four websites with one system and assign roles and rights to employees of the tableware museums. Very practical when not only the exhibitions, but also the permanent content travels to the various museums.

Supply determines form

The new websites are designed to make maximum use of the high-quality images produced for the exhibitions. Mainly because of this changing imagery, the content and form of the four websites differ and innovate from each other despite the corresponding structure.

Like a personal tour

The user experience is designed based on the different needs visitors have. If you want a quick look at the current program, you'll be taken directly there. Are you more interested in the underlying topics? You're just a click away from in-depth content. Are you looking for the offerings for children, groups or schools? You're quickly directed to relevant subprograms and activities. And finally, when you are ready to plan your visit, you can easily find all the practical information at a glance.

A museum about people

Together with the Africa Museum, the Museum of Ethnology and the World Museum, the Tropenmuseum is part of the National Museum of World Cultures (NMvW) Foundation. By working intensively together on their shared mission, the museums are able to create an even richer offering for their visitors. However, the old websites did not do justice to the experience of visiting. Nor did a laborious content management system help bring the offerings online to life. It was up to us to bring the user experience to the level that visitors, communications team and museums deserve.
